I also grew up with no television. The TV broke when I was about 9 years old and my parents could not afford to get it fixed. Granted this was in the 50s when TV was not even close to what it is today. But once I had access to it later in life, I was like a kid in a candy store. I could not get enough of it and would watch anything.
I strongly agree that it is better to teach children to think critically about what they watch and how they use all the media available today. It's a life long skill of making choices.
